A number of countries in Asia Pacific Region celebrated the world Milk Day on June 1, 2013. In Thailand FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific joined hands with the Department of Livestock Development (DLD), Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, the Dairy Farming Promotion Organization of Thailand (DPO) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), in co-organizing the 2013 World Milk Day Celebration in Thailand with the main theme: "Milk for Health and Prosperity of Southeast Asian region".

School milk and local dairy development—Myanmar makes great strides

Asia has staggeringly high levels of underweight and malnourished children with continuous large disparities in this respect among urban and rural children. The prevalence of underweight children in rural areas is almost double that of children in urban areas. School milk programs have proven to be an effective means to reduce under-nutrition. But most such programs in Asia have focused on urban schools and have often been supported by imported milk powder supplies.
